Many people ask us - where did the name Hoppy Hall come from and the simple answer is Upminster!
Originally, we had looked at siting the shop in the Upminster area and one particular shop that we viewed sat on land where once a manor house and farm stood.
Back in the 1500's the land belonged to Ralph Latham who also owned Gaynes and Upminster Hall and it was held within the family for sometime. The three gabled frontage was a similar design to other manor houses in the area but no one seems to know where the name Hoppy Hall or Hoppe Hall comes from. Sir James Esdaile held the Court Baron for the Manor of Gaynes at Hoppy Hall back in the 1770's and the hall was occupied by various family relations before it was sold in 1819 to the Rev. John Clayton before being passed to the Benn family - yes those ones of parliamentary fame!
There then followed a succession of owners until being put up for auction in 1929 and sold to the then tenant George Eve who stayed living there whilst the new housing estate was built around him. Finally the Hall was sold to local developer Alex MacGregor and demolished in 1939 - a sad end to a long and distinguished history where the majestic cedar tree was almost as famous a land mark as the hall itself.
Now a days the only place where you will see the name Hoppy Hall is on the municipal car park that sits on it's grounds and once the signs get changed then the once well known local name will be no more - a sad thing to happen indeed.
At least that is what we thought having read the story and so vowed to keep the name alive and even though our little carpet shop is not situated in Upminster but in the nearby, equally historic, town of Romford we love the idea that the name and the history surrounding it will last just a little bit longer!
